The residents were kept busy all last week by creating memory books with Amy. Amy is a nursing student who chose Eden Heights for her community project. She enjoyed learning about the residents lives, both past and present. The residents enjoyed using their own special touches into creating their books, while reminiscing about their childhood, families, friends and their life at Eden Heights. Everyone had such a wonderful time, they decided to get together again and create a memory book of Eden Heights for families and visitors to see. 2011 Memory Walk

On Saturday, some of our residents, staff, family and friends from Eden Heights participated in the Memory Walk to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. To raise donations we sold paper elephants, had a hot dog sale during our Classic Car Show and held an afghan raffle, made by one of our residents. Classic Car Show

Saturday was our Classic Car Show and Hot Dog sale to benefit the WNY Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk. Families and friends had a great time showing off their favorite cars and reminiscing about the past. Mr. Winter was proud to display his Model T Ford while wearing his hat and tails. Charles was all smiles to take a country ride in this Model T Ford. Thank you to all that participated!

Back to School Day

Monday we went Back to School. Our first class was Yoga with Ms. Darlene, then History with Ms. Roush were we discussed the various Wars of our country and trivia, next Creative Writing with Mrs. Crosier in which the class created stories and headlines on various topics. After lunch break it was off to Science class with Mr. Paul who demonstrated an experiment for the class. The day ended with awards and report cards. A Variety of Programs

In addition to our 9/11 Ceremony and our Back to School Day it has been a week filled with a variety of programs for Assisted Living Week. Tuesday we reminisced by watching our 2011 Prom film that was so graciously put together by one of our family members. It was great to see the wonderful dinner and dancing with the Gowanda High School Students, Wednesday it was Family Bingo Night, Thursday a silly sock contest which had everyone smiling all day by watching all the colorful & crazy socks walk by and Friday a program by Denise Richard who performed a portrayal of Amelia Earhart’s life. On Saturday we will end the week with a Classic Car Show and Hot Dog Sale to benefit the Erie County Alzheimer’s Association 2011 Memory Walk. Remembering 9/11

On Sunday our residents, staff and families took part in a Memorial Service to honor and remember the victims of 9/11. Our service included a 9/11 flag raising, hymns, prayers, a candlelight vigil and a poem titled “The Names” by Billy Collins that we would like to share:

Yesterday, I lay awake in the palm of the night.
A soft rain stole in, unhelped by any breeze,
And when I saw the silver glaze on the windows,
I started with A, with Ackerman, as it happened,

Boating and Fishing Trip

Carnival Day

In honor of the Erie County Fair we held our own "Fair Day". Everyone had fun playing the fish bowl game, duck pond, bean bag toss and dice raffle. The prizes were also fair themed from cotton candy & lollipops to stuffed animals. The residents also enjoyed corn dogs, french fries, popcorn and loganberry. Eden Cornfest Parade

One of our biggest summer events is the Eden Cornfest, which is a 37 year tradition here in Eden. Eden Heights was proud to participate in this years festivities with a tent in the fest that had information and giveaways regarding our facility. Our Eden Heights Vets were honored to be invited to a ceremony on Sunday morning in remembrance of all who served. We were also excited to be in the parade for the second year in a row. The residents threw candy and greeted all the children and families along the parade route. We also had our own Eden Heights cheering section along the parade from the residents that came to watch us. It was a wonderful day that brought a new experience to many of us and gave us time to spend with folks from all over WNY and the community. Eden Heights Family Community Picnic

Our Eden Heights Family Picnic was done in country style this year. Our families and residents enjoyed music from The Country Gentlemen-Gene, Howard & Dan who are one of Eden Heights favorites, country line dancing with Dare 2 Dance and face painting and balloon figures with Kandi Kiss. The food was down home country cooking prepared by our chefs, which included BBQ pulled pork, macaroni salad, chips, pop and apple cobbler. We also had a patriotic afghan made by one of our residents Rose Mariani to help raise donations for the WNY Alzheimer’s Association 2011 Memory Walk. Beach Bingo

Picnic Outing

Garden Party

It’s been a busy week at Eden Heights. For the 4th of July we played patriotic bingo, enjoyed a BBQ lunch and watched a tribute to America the Beautiful, that showed appreciation for our countries beautiful landscapes and landmarks along with patriotic music and ice cream. Tuesday we were entertained with music by David Stockton and took a shopping trip to Wal-Mart on Wednesday. Friday we celebrated with a garden party in the courtyard, which was updated with more flowers, vegetable plants, bird feeders, chairs and decor for our community and their families to enjoy. In Appreciation

The residents came up with the idea of having a staff appreciation party for the employees on Friday afternoon to thank them for all they do and to show appreciation. The residents started off by giving heartfelt speeches to the staff, followed by serving the staff pizza and wings. The residents also painted sun catchers for the staff. It was a wonderful time for the staff and residents to socialize with each other. The staff were very thankful to the residents for planning such an event and for their heartfelt gesture. Welcome Summer Social

A Father's Day Steak Dinner

Today the residents from Eden Heights of Eden and West Seneca came together to celebrate Father’s Day in Eden. The men started off with shrimp cocktail for an appetizer. Our chef Laurie made steaks on the grill to perfection, that was served with fresh green beans and a baked potato. We also could not forget dessert, which was delicious peanut butter pie. A Flag Day Ceremony

On Tuesday, June 14th Eden Heights was honored to have the Veterans from Local #880 here to perform a flag day ceremony. The program started with the Pledge of Allegiance, morning prayer, recognizing our eden heights veterans, changing of the flag and taps, as everyone proudly held their flags. Afterwards, refreshments were served in the dining room.

Our Weekly Summer Cookout

The Eden Second Grade Class Performs

On Friday, May 27th the second grade class from Eden came to our community and performed “Around the World”. As they took us to different countries such as Japan, Israeli, Australia and Morocco they sang, danced and informed us about the different languages and cultures. We were all impressed on how they also sang and counted in different languages. They taught us about the different animals in each country. Everyone enjoyed all their hard work and talent. One of Eden Heights special events is our Senior Prom, which was held on Saturday night. The excitement started in early May as everyone helped make favors, centerpieces and corsages. The evening started off with a toast, candlelight dinner & pictures. Later we enjoyed refreshments and music from CJ Sound. We were also joined by the students from the Gowanda National Honor Society. There was no generation gap here, residents, students and staff had a great time visiting and dancing the night away. A Magical Family Social

Mother's Day Social

Our Mother's day Celebration included the resident's families coming together to celebrate their mother's and grandmother's. The social included Danielle Di Stefano who performed a special tribute concert of arias, love songs, Broadway hits and ballads, which everyone loved. A Visit from the East Eden Garden Club

On Friday we had a visit from the East Eden Garden Club, who volunteered their time and materials to make terrariums with our residents. Many of our residents love plants and gardening, so they did not mind getting their hands dirty from the soil to make a one of a kind creation. They will be proudly displayed on their window sills.

Concentration Game

This afternoon our residents tested their memory skills with a variety of games. First off, they were paired with a partner that they had to interview. After the interview, they were asked to turn around and describe what their partner was wearing, eye color etc. Then, they had to see how many answers they could remember from the prior interview. We then, ended the hour with a concentration card game. Not only were their minds exercised but they also had fun learning new things about each other.

Hockey Shootout

Today the residents got a feeling for what the Buffalo Sabres go thru each game. Their hockey shootout skills were tested this afternoon as they took turns shooting the puck in the net. For most, it was their first time and they beat the goalie. It was a lot of fun and exercise. Then, afterwards they were treated to hot cocoa and cookies.

Candlelight Dinner

To beat the winter blues we are warming up with a candlelight dinner for our residents. Thru the next several months small groups of residents will be invited to partake in a special dinner menu complete with all the special touches including dinner music in our activity room to make their experience memorable. Holiday Balloon Game

Boston Kazoo Band

During the holiday season there are various groups that join us at Eden Heights to perform holiday music. One of the groups was the Boston Kazoo Band. Veteran's Day

Today in Honor of all Veteran's Eden Heights held a breakfast for our Veterans and invited Veterans from the local post to join us. Everyone enjoyed the food, and the company they shared the meal with. We also learned that our residents served in all different branches of the Military from Army, Navy,and Air Force. A Cultural Visit

On Monday evening Eden Heights had the honor of having four foreign exchange students visit. They are in the US for a year and are currently attending Eden and Gowanda High Schools. They stated that the transition so far has been easier than expected. They are enjoying their stay even though it is colder than they are all used to. They gave a wonderful presentation from each of their home countries which included the history, education, cultural differences, religion and family life from Eygpt, Indonesia, Germany and Thailand. It was a wonderful experience for the residents to hear what life is like in other countries. The students then answered questions from the residents and shared their hopes and dreams for the future. We wish them well.

Family Trick or Treating Party

On Saturday afternoon it was time for the kids to treat or treat to the residents rooms. The families of the residents and staff were invited to bring in their little ghouls and goblins for some halloween fun. There were many happy faces as the kids were getting their bags filled with treats and the residents had the best time time watching them dressed in their costumes. October Activities

The Autumn seasons brings many fun activities to do. First off we had an Oktoberfest party with music by Ramundo. He kept the group clapping and singing with his songs. The residents enjoyed german appetizers to complete the celebration.

We also had a apple pie baking contest between the residents. Rise, Stephanie, Neil & Jim offered to be the judges. The contest ended up in a tie and everyone got a delicious piece of pie. So everyone was a winner.

Last week the residents pulled up their sleeves and carved a pumpkin. The seeds were then cleaned and baked to enjoy that night. The jack o' lantern was then put out on the front porch for all to enjoy.

We could not forget bobbing for apples with a twist. Instead of the usual way, the residents were blind folded and had to feel for the apples with a few other fruits mixed in, to trick them. We had lots of fun and laughs.

Outings

In October a few of our residents went to volunteer at the Eden-N. Collins Food Pantry. The residents said it was a fun experience, but most of all a chance to help out others.

The residents also took a lunch outing to the Hamburg Village Cafe. It has a charming atmosphere as we were seated by the fireplace for a wonderful lunch and conversation.

A Visit from the Science Museum

Alzheimer's Walk

This past weekend, the residents and staff of Eden Heights participated with thousands of individuals rallying for one cause to help end Alzheimer's Disease. The staff and residents joined as one team for the Alzheimer's Walk which took place in Delaware Park. It was a cold, windy day, but we all braved the weather for this great cause. Car and Gift Show

To end the week of our "Living Life" Celebration Eden Heights hosted a Classic Car & Gift Show. The cars brought back memories and stories for many of our residents who used to own some of these classic cars. There was also shopping to enjoy from purses to baked goods and jewelry. Staff and Residents Games

Living Life is what we at Eden Heights want to accomplish every day not only during Assisted Living Week. To help us live life we encourage residents and staff to participate in different activities together. One of these activities included our resident and staff social. The social consisted of different games that resident and staff played together. The games were called win it in a minute, which made it a race against the clock and the other participants. The residents enjoyed watching the staff race against one another in these various games. Some of the games were pulling tissues out of a box the fastest, trying to get a cookie off the forehead into the mouth without any hands, and an obstacle course. One of the many fun games and events we had this past week was our balloon popping game. Inside each balloon was a different message that the residents read and followed what it said. Some of the messages including just smiling, laughing, or singing a song. The residents enjoyed each task there was inside the balloon. Not only did the resident enjoy their secret messages, but more so they enjoyed popping the balloons. The balloon popping had the staff and residents laughing and enjoying life. Breakfast Buffet

This morning we celebrated Assisted Living Week with a large hardy breakfast buffet. The residents enjoyed all the food prepared for them. It was a great start to the day. Mystery Ride

On Wednesday afternoon we took a mystery ride. Our residents were surprised when we arrived at our destination, which was the Herschell Carrousel Museum in North Tonawanda. There's a lot of history in the musuem from the first carousel horse made to the little dipper from Crystal Beach and the Wurlitzer Music Roll Shop. The best part of the tour was getting to ride the carousel which was started in 1916 and has 36 carved horses, 580 lights and plays band organ music. It brought back the kid in all of us. Then we enjoyed shopping at the Gift Shop.

School Days

On Monday, it was time to get ready for school. The residents started with homeroom and introductions, then off to their first class which was physical education (yoga), then English class which included spelling and penmanship. Next was mathematics where they were tested on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Then everyone's favorite, a brown bag lunch in the cafeteria, where the residents were also given "Living Life" buttons and a "Living Life" poem to celebrate National Assisted Living Week. In the afternoon it was off to Chorus, then back to homeroom class for Report Cards, Awards and an after school snack. I am happy to report that all the students passed with flying colors and no one was send to the principals office.

On Sunday grandparents, grandkids and great grandkids celebrated being together with laughter and ice cream sundaes. Everyone enjoyed Magic and balloon figures by Ted. Water Front

Today, we took a ride to downtown Buffalo to see the water front. It has many new and exciting changes that the resident enjoyed. Some of the changes included seeing the statues carved from wood and the lighthouse. We also passed the naval park, and the new pier along the lake. The residents enjoyed the view along the lake, while also enjoying an Ice Cream Cone. The trip down to the water front was a nice, relaxing way to enjoy the summertime heat. The Downhome Country Cloggers

On Tuesday evening we were treated to the wonderful dancing of the Downhome Country Cloggers of Eden. They are all great dancers, that had us moving in our seats. They dance to all kinds of music, but mostly country. Our residents especially enjoyed the only male member of the group Jason, who has been with the group since a tot and who choreographs most of the dances. Jason's mom is also in the group. One of our favorite summer events is Fair Games. This week is the opening of the Erie County Fair, so what a better way to get in the spirit. Eden Heights first time in the Eden Cornfest Parade

Sunday was an exciting day for the residents and staff, because it was our first experience in the Eden Cornfest Parade. It is the biggest day of the summer for this area. We decorated the van with fringe, butterflies, flowers, balloons, pictures of our events and the American flag. We had a great time beforehand in the lineup meeting people. We then started our drive down the parade route waving and throwing candy, which is equal to Halloween for the kids. What a welcome response we got from the large crowd that lined the street for a mile and a half. We also had support from the Eden Heights team that watched the parade. We can't wait for next year. Garden

Here at Eden Heights we enjoy our warm weather and sunshine. Along with the sunshine comes our seasonal gardens and plants. We planted a wonderful vegetable garden in the spring filled with tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and more. The garden that the residents helped to plant is growing daily. We already made zucchini bread from what has grown in the garden. We hope to use the other vegetables in the near future. Also we had a sun flower pop up in the garden that has grown about 7 feet. Sensory Safari with the Buffalo Zoo

Lions, Tigers, and Bears. O my! This past Tuesday we had a special visit from some little critters. The Buffalo Zoo visited Eden Heights with their Zoomobile bringing many different types of animals ranging from an owl to a snake. They also brought animal shells and skins to touch. Eden Heights Family Picnic

On Saturday we had our resident family picnic. This years theme was Patriotic. We enjoyed a cookout with hot dogs, pasta salad, baked beans, watermelon and home baked red, white and blue star cookies. Then residents, families and staff, sang and danced to music with Ramundo. The kids young and old alike had fun with balloon figures and face painting. We also raised money to benefit the Alzhiemers Association Memory Walk in September with an afghan raffle made by Rose Mariani one of our residents. Water Balloon Toss

This past week at Eden Heights we had many fun events and games to play. One of the games that we played was Water Balloon Toss. Not only was it a fun way to exercise our arms, but also a great way to beat the heat. The game ended with a big splash with many of our residents soaked and laughing. A Day at the Zoo

On Wednesday we spent the day at the Buffalo Zoo. We started off watching the elephants romping around. Then we met the sea lions and otters. On Wednesday we at Eden Heights celebrated the warm weather by taking off our long sweaters and pulling out our T-Shirts. Not only did many of the residents take part in our contest, our staff did as well. It was hard to decide the winners with so many great T-Shirts out there. The categories included most colorful, most meaningful, and funniest. The residents and staff had a fun time looking at the shirts and hearing the stories of where the shirts came from.

Flag Raising Ceremony

Thursday was a special day for Eden Heights residents and staff. The residents donated a new flag and pole, which they had located in front of the building, where it could be proudly displayed. This project was very meaningful to our residents because it shows their patriotism and loyalty for their country. We were very thankful to have the local veterans from Post #880 in Eden to perform the ceremony for us. The program started off with a introduction by Rise, Administrator then a prayer, short story, twenty one gun salute and taps by the Veterans. Planting our Garden

On thursday it was a beautiful day, so we decided to plant our garden. We had colorful flowers for our hanging pots and to plant by the gazebo. In our backyard we will plant flowers around the trees. In our vegetable garden we planted various kinds of tomatoes, even the topsy turvy plant, cucumbers, eggplant, onions, zucchini, and cabbage. On Tuesday May 11th was our Eden Senior Prom with our residents, the Gowanda National Honor Society, families and staff. The evening started off with a champagne toast and candlelight dinner. Today, we had a fun time playing golf, and pool. Since it is starting to warm up, we at Eden Heights are practicing our golf swings before we head out on the golfing range. We had a few holes in one. It was a fun time for all who came. Not only were we getting our exercise with golf we played some pool as well. Trying to get the balls into the pockets was a great time. We were all winners today on the golfing range and on the pool table.

Our Visit the Baby Animals

Today we had a visit from the baby animals of Sundance Farm. There were ducks, goats, bunnies, hens and a lamb. We created new memories and brought back old memories for some of the residents that grew up on a farm. It was great to hold all the animals. They are so precious.

An Irish Celebration

Happy Saint Patrick's Day! To start off our Irish Celebration we had the Clann Na Cara Dance School come in. They performed many classic Irish Dances, while our residents clapped along. The more the residents clapped the higher the dancers kicked. After the performance we served refreshments ranging from our lucky green milk to our cupcake topped like the hills of Ireland. The next day we had a Saint Patrick's Day party. We did a coin toss to try to help fill up the Leprechaun's pot of Gold. We also had door prizes. To finish the party we served jello cake and refreshments. Like always our residents were decked out in their sea of green for Saint Patty's Day.
